QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW:
Health Promotion Officer is new profession in health sector that deal with prevention of diseases and improving health lifestyles.

PURPOSE STATEMENT:
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to:
Carry out basic assessments of communities, households, groups and individuals
Provide basic health education and referrals for a wide range of services
Support and assist in navigating the health and social services

Recipients of this qualification will be able to:
Treat simple diseases, injuries, wounds and refer to the clinic
Provide basic nursing care
Provide palliative care
Take temperature, Bp, Pulse and respiration
Check outbreak of transmitted diseases, teach and refer for treatment
Check Sexual Transmitted Infections, teach and refer for treatment
Check children and refer for immunization
Check pregnant mothers, mothers who have given birth and their babies and refer for treatment
Conduct HIV and AIDS test and counselling
Check drug and substance abusers and refer them to rehabilitation centres
Teach people about dangers of drug and substance abuse
Teach people about cleanliness of in-house, environment and water
Teach about women and men’s health
Teach about child’s health
Teach about health life styles
Conduct household assessments and identify those at risk of health-related issues including impairments in health
Provide information, education and support for healthy behaviours and appropriate home care
Provide psychosocial support
Identify and manage minor health problems

WHAT CAN ONE DO AFTER OBTAINING THIS QUALIFICATION? Find employment.

Major employer is Department of Health (Clinics, rehabilitation centres, testing and counselling centres) through its implementation of Primary Health Care Re-engineering under NHI.
Other employers include Schools, Waste disposal plants, Water purification plants, Local municipalities, Mental Health Centres, Old age homes, Mines, Health Research centres, Cancer foundation, Heart foundation, Diabetes foundation, and NGOs.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Ancillary Health Care NQF Level 1 or
ABET Level 4 with FLC
Grade 9, 10, 11 or 12 (No specific subjects are required).
NQF Level 1 or equivalent competences in Mathematical Literacy and Communications.

DURATION:
12 months with 2 intakes per year

This qualification is made up of the following compulsory Knowledge and Practical Skill Modules:

KNOWLEDGE MODULES:
KM-01: Public and Community Health Support
KM-02: Family and Community Services
KM-03: Basics of Community Health
Total number of credits for Knowledge Modules: 40.

PRACTICAL SKILL MODULES: (63 credits) 
PM-01: Mobilise community to address community health issues
PM-02: Identify the service needs and ease of access to health and social services
PM-03: Promote healthy lifestyles and mental wellbeing
PM-04: Promote HIV prevention including HIV testing, condom use, partner reduction, circumcision, STI
PM-05: Provide information on prevention of accidents and incidents in homes
PM-06: Record and report on information provided to individuals, households and communities
PM-07: Promote and provide support for maternal and women’s health
PM-08: Promote child health
PM-09: Support community members with psychosocial problems
PM-10: Provide an integrated approach to support treatment
PM-11: Identify and treat a select number of minor ailments
PM-12: Provide basic support to people who are unable to care for themselves

WM-01: Operation and dynamics of communities
WM-02: Household registration and assessment processes
WM-03: Health promotion processes
WM-04: Formal health provision processes

Assessment and award:
Total number of credits for Work Experience Modules: 60.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS:
Upon completion learners may articulate vertically to a:
Further Education and Training Certificate: Community Health Work at NQF Level 4.
Further Education and Training Certificate: Community Development: HIV/AIDS Support,
Higher Certificate in Social Auxiliary Work at NQF Level 5

NATIONAL EXAMINATION:
Learners will write national exams after completing the course. Exams are written in March and October/November every year

CERTIFICATION:
Learners who have passed National Examination will be awarded Occupational Certificate: Health Promotion Officer by Quality Council.
