Civil Engineering N4-N6

What you should know about Civil Engineering N4-N6.

Each N-Level in Civil Engineering N4-N6 takes a minimum of 3 months (Trimester) OR 6 months (Semester) to complete. A student in the possession of Grade12 with Mathematics and Science or N3 is admitted into N4. One can proceed to the next level only when the previous level has been successfully completed with minimum of 4 subjects. On successful completion of each level the candidate will be issued with a National Certificate by The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Quality assured by The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). It is recommended that students enrolling on the National N4 Certificate programme complete the N5 and N6 as well as the 18-month or 2000 hours of suitable workplace experiential training in order to qualify for the National Diploma. Students can then enter into either a University of Technology to complete a degree qualification or into a workplace that requires the qualification. 

The NATED N4-N6 Civil Engineering qualification is designed to provide the theoretical component in order for you to attain a National Diploma in Civil Engineering. The practical component comprises of a minimum of 18 months (2000 national working hours) of work experience relevant to your trade.

The Department of Higher Education will issue you with a National Certificate once you have passed each level with a minimum of 4 subjects eg. N4, N5, N6.

    • Grade 12 or N3 equivalent

    5. Local Government (Municipalities)
    6. Quantity Surveying
    7. Road Construction
    8. Structural Surveying Companies
